Is your sciatica so painful it prevents you from working? Evidence is growing that chiropractic can alleviate sciatic pain and get you back to work faster.
Consider this study, reported in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeuticsin 2010. Forty patients were randomly assigned to surgery or chiropractic spinal manipulation. The result: “Sixty percent of patients with sciatica who had failed other medical management benefited from spinal manipulation to the same degree as if they underwent surgical intervention.”
Another study, conducted in 2007, evaluated 44 Norwegian workers who presented at the hospital with severe sciatica pain. Most of those patients had been experiencing pain for three or more weeks prior to their hospital visit. 33 patients were treated in the chiropractor’s clinic, whereas 11 who could not be transported were initially treated by the chiropractor in the hospital. Norwegian public health records indicate that the average patient with sciatica is disabled for 72 days. In this study, forty ( 91 percent) of the patients returned to work full-time within 21 days. Two patients returned to work at reduced work levels, one at 80 percent and the other at 50 percent.
Why does chiropractic relieve sciatica? Because chiropractors are experts on the spine. And, according to a report from Harvard Medical School, in nine out of 10 cases, sciatica is caused by a displaced disk in the lower spine, also known as a spinal misalignment. The displaced disk pinches or compresses the sciatic nerve, causing irritation and inflammation. Compression also can be caused by arthritis, pregnancy, or trauma or injury to the spine.
Chiropractors know that spinal misalignments interrupt the flow of nerve energy, which travels from the brain, down the spine, and out into the tiny nerves that feed every system in your body.
By eliminating nerve interference in the spine, chiropractors specializing in Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) can realign the shape of your spine, taking pressure off the delicate nerves responsible for your sciatica and restoring normal nerve flow. CBP is the most advanced, researched and results-oriented chiropractic protocol.
